I have close friends who decided to move from Illinois to Texas–back to his home. He was an executive in a fairly large company near Chicago and she was a professor at a college in the city, so they made a combined income that was fairly impressive by most people’s measures.
The move to Austin Texas resulted in a drop in their income of 30%. And a house with 1,000 more square feet, a property tax bill $2,000 less, and–with other lower taxes and costs–an increase in disposable income of nearly 20%.
But according to Robert Reich (and others) they are poorer.
