Sweet Justice

Being able to see the risks of over-reaching regulation is a frustrating skill. Being excoriated for predicting the effects of such–accurately–is enraging. But listening to the wails of pain from the nasty little advocates when they discover (though never admit) that you were right? Priceless.

I’ve had numerous discussions with liberal friends about the dangers of over-reach, particularly in the movement to regulate what they see as unpleasant speech. Most liberals will claim support for free speech, ut it always comes with a “but.” The “but” specifically applies to speech that they see as provocative or upsetting to any of the classes that should be protected–protected from right-wingers of course.  Such groups include, but are not limited to, Blacks, Women, Gays, Lesbians…pretty much anyone who isn’t white and male.

As I’ve tried to say in the past, such efforts will end up applying to many of the liberals when perceived insult is the measure of guilt. Most of my liberal collegues clearly never saw the sanctions being applied to them because–of course–their motives could not possibly be questioned.
